3 Health Benefits of Standing Desks That You Shouldn’t Ignore

If you’ve been paying attention to the news for the last half-decade, you’ve probably heard about the latest office technological craze. And that is none other than standing desks. The reason for its popularity is that research suggests that employees who spend more time sitting are more likely to suffer health issues.

Most white-collar workers are more vulnerable since they spend their days in front of computers and laptops. Thus, even a simple leg stretch to the water cooler or coffee machine may provide great satisfaction.

While most office employees are used to sitting at their desks, it is not the healthiest option in the short or long run. So, how can having a standing desk help you in this regard?

    • Orthopedic Health Effects

When you factor in more than 8 hours of sitting work per day, 17,000 hours a year, and a heavy load of paper and computer work, it’s no wonder why most office jobs can take a physical toll on you. While sitting can be satisfying, doing so for an extended period may cause discomfort on your neck, back, and hips. And in terms of orthopedic health, standing is unquestionably a superior alternative to sitting.

According to the “Take-a-Stand Project,” participants who stood for an average of 66 minutes per day had a 54% decline in neck and upper back discomfort. And of course, standing all the time is not ideal also, which is why it’s crucial to strike a balance between sitting and standing to get adequate movement while avoiding physical strain.

    • Improves Your Mood

Long durations of sitting are becoming increasingly associated with emotions of anxiety and stress. So, it’s logical to believe that minor modifications in office employees’ everyday work routines might have a substantial influence on our overall mood.

Presently, most businesses depend on a “sit-stand office” atmosphere to maintain productivity while enhancing employee happiness. As such, scientific studies show that standing boosts blood flow in the brain, affecting how you think and feel. Consequently, when you’re delighted with what you’re doing, it can have a trickling effect on your attention and creativity.

Employees can now minimise occupational weariness, presenteeism, and everyday anxiety — all of which improve the overall quality of life. Therefore, the use of standing desks should highly be regarded as a necessity rather than just an add-up to a monotonous office design.

    • Helps Prevent Other Health Issues

Sitting for lengthy periods causes more than just musculoskeletal harm. In fact, extended sitting has been related to various major health issues, including heart disease, obesity, cancer, cardiovascular disease, and even premature death.

Although standing isn’t a prescribed medicine to fix these unfortunate conditions, it can significantly aid in prevention and, to some extent, lower the effect of some of the diseases’ underlying factors.

For instance, in a study of 23 obese office workers, alternating between standing and sitting every 30 minutes reduced blood sugar levels by 11.1% on average. And according to another research, standing also burns more calories than sitting. So, employing a standing desk may help you avoid the weight gain associated with long durations of sitting.

While there is no evidence that using a standing desk will provide you with all of these advantages immediately, the evidence does support the idea that individuals who sit for extended periods are more likely to have unfavourable health impacts.

So, consider using standing desks and other office ergonomics. As technology advances, these contraptions should be at the forefront of any makeshift home offices or other workplaces.
