The Moir Stakes is named after former Moonee Valley Racing Club chairman Sir Alan Moir and was first run in 1976. The incomparable BLACK CAVIAR recorded back-to-back wins in 2010 and 2011 while the underrated Queensland sprinter BUFFERING recorded three wins in four years. While the race rarely attracts a capacity field, it is always a competitive betting race with a number of winning chances.
The Moir Stakes training honours have been shared evenly with Queensland trainer Robert Heathcote and Victorian trainer Mick Price enjoying recent success. Damian Oliver is the most prominent current-day Moir Stakes jockey with four career wins.
